Pets Get a Festive Double Portion

An old French country custom dictates that domestic animals and farm livestock must be taken care of first on Christmas Eve. Farmers traditionally gave their cattle and horses a double portion of feed before the human Réveillon feast began. It was widely believed that for a few brief moments at midnight, animals were granted the temporary power of human speech to praise the holiday.
