The Singapore Sleigh-Ride (Chapters 1 to 6)

Listen to "The Singapore Sleigh-Ride" on Spreaker.

When Chloe, a high-flying event planner who views Christmas as a strict logistical checklist, crosses paths with Nick, a freelance actor who treats the festive season like an unscripted adventure, sparklers fly in the tropical heat of Singapore. Rushing between high-society gigs and chaotic family gatherings, Nick finds himself stuck in a festive traffic jam with a woman who has zero time for holiday magic. Can a shared cab ride, a cheeky reindeer joke, and a little tropical chaos teach a strict perfectionist that the best moments in life are the ones you never plan?

Chapter 1: A Festive Rush
Tropical heat radiates from the tarmac outside the grand entrance of the Raffles Hotel. Chloe adjusts her clipboard with a crisp, no-nonsense snap. Her tailored linen suit is immaculate, completely unbothered by the Singapore humidity. For Chloe, Christmas Eve is not a holiday. It is a battlefield of schedules, catering lists, and high-profile clients.
"The gingerbread house needs more icing, and the carolers are exactly two minutes late," Chloe mutters into her hands-free earpiece.
Suddenly, a blur of crimson and white bursts through the glass doors. Nick sprints toward the taxi stand. He wears a heavy, velvet Santa suit, complete with white faux-fur trim that looks entirely torturous in thirty-degree weather. His faux beard hangs slightly askew from his chin.
"Taxi! Please tell me that cab is free," Nick pants, waving a large sack that clangs with plastic toys.
Chloe steps firmly into his path, pointing her pen like a weapon. "Excuse me, Mr. Kringle. I hailed that vehicle for my VIP client. Step back."
Nick halts, his blue eyes crinkling with instant amusement. "Listen, lady, I have a strict deadline in Serangoon. If I miss this family gig, twenty kids will lose their faith in the North Pole. Have a heart."
"My client pays for punctuality, not festive folklore," Chloe replies, her voice tight. "Take another sleigh."
The Raffles doorman smiles, tipped off by the commotion. "Rough day for the reindeer, Santa? Where did you leave the sleigh?"
Nick doesn't miss a beat. He adjusts his beard and winks at the doorman. "Ah, you know how it is. The government has strict rules. PM Lee won’t let me fly this way in Singapore! The aviation fines are astronomical."
A little boy standing nearby with his parents gasps, pointing a sticky finger. "Look! It’s Santa! He’s real!"
The parents, previously glued to their smartphones, blink in surprise. Chloe sighs loudly, checking her watch. The gridlock on the roads is worsening due to the seasonal rush.
"Look," Nick says, dropping the theatrical voice and leaning closer. "We are both in a rush. The roads are jammed. Why don't we share the cab? I'll pay for the whole ride."
Chloe evaluates him. He is chaotic, sweaty, and completely disruptive to her orderly world. Yet, she desperately needs to get across town to inspect her next venue.
"Fine," Chloe snaps, opening the door. "But no singing."

Chapter 2: The Shared Sleigh
The interior of the taxi offers a blessed blast of air conditioning. Chloe immediately claims the window seat, pulling out her tablet to check the traffic reports. Nick slumps next to her, shedding his thick white gloves with a sigh of relief.
"You know, an event planner with a scowl on Christmas Eve is bad luck," Nick remarks, extending a hand. "I’m Nick, by the way."
"Chloe. And I don't believe in luck. I believe in execution," she says without looking up. "Why are you wearing that ridiculous outfit in this climate anyway? Surely there are lighter costumes."
"Authenticity, Chloe. The kids know the difference between cheap felt and real velvet," Nick says proudly. "Besides, the joy on their faces makes the heatstroke entirely worth it."
Chloe glances at him. There is a genuine warmth in his expression that makes her feel strangely defensive. She focuses back on her screen. "Well, your authenticity is currently stuck in a bottleneck on the Central Expressway. We aren't moving."
"Then we chat," Nick decides cheerfully. "What makes a person so cynical about the most wonderful time of the year?"
"I am not cynical. I am realistic," Chloe counters. "Christmas in the corporate world is about maximizing revenue and meeting deadlines. It’s a lot of pressure."
Nick leans back against the headrest. "Sounds exhausting. When was the last time you actually enjoyed a holiday without a clipboard in your hand?"
Chloe opens her mouth to argue, but the words catch in her throat. She genuinely cannot remember. Her phone rings, saving her from answering. It is her boss, demanding an update on the Serangoon venue. Chloe feels her chest tighten as she tries to handle the demanding corporate tone while sitting next to a man dressed as Father Christmas.

Chapter 3: Detours and Discoveries
The taxi driver sighs, tapping the steering wheel. "Very bad accident ahead, miss. We are going to be stuck here for at least forty-five minutes."
Chloe gasps. "Forty-five minutes? No, that ruins my entire timeline! I need to be at the Serangoon estate to manage the arrival of the ice sculptures."
Nick checks his own watch. His face drops slightly, losing its playful edge. "My booking is in twenty minutes. The kids are waiting."
Chloe looks at him, expecting him to complain. Instead, Nick rolls down his window and looks at the surrounding streets. "Driver, let us out here. We can take the MRT subway station just around the corner. It’s much faster."
Chloe looks horrified. "Walk? In public? With you dressed like that?"
"Unless you have a magic carpet hidden in that sleek briefcase, this is our best bet," Nick says, opening his door. He grabs his heavy toy sack and steps into the humid air.
Chloe hesitates for three seconds before cursing under her breath and following him. The sight of an immaculate corporate professional chasing a sweating Santa Claus down a busy Singapore sidewalk draws immediate attention. Passersby pull out their phones to take photos.
"Stop running!" Chloe calls out, her heels clicking furiously against the pavement.
"Speed up, corporate! Santa doesn't wait!" Nick yells back, flashing a brilliant smile at a group of tourists.
As they navigate the bustling train station, Chloe notices how Nick handles the attention. He doesn't ignore people; he waves, speaks to children, and spreads genuine cheer. For the first time, Chloe stops thinking about her schedule and simply observes the joy Nick creates around him. It is a completely foreign concept to her structured lifestyle.

Chapter 4: The Serangoon Meltdown
They emerge from the train station into the residential heart of Serangoon. The afternoon sun is blazing, and Nick’s velvet suit is visibly damp. Chloe feels a sudden, unexpected pang of sympathy for him.
"Are you going to survive this?" she asks, her tone softening.
"I've survived hotter Christmases than this," Nick pants, though his stride is slowing. "Just a few more blocks."
When they finally arrive at the grand gates of the Serangoon estate, chaos greets them. It turns out that Nick’s family gig and Chloe’s corporate ice-sculpture venue are the exact same address. The wealthy homeowners are throwing a massive festive party, and the caterers are currently arguing with the ice delivery team.
"Where is the event coordinator?!" a frantic hostess screams from the driveway.
Chloe steps forward, instantly switching into her professional persona. "Right here, Mrs. Tan. Please calm down. What seems to be the issue?"
While Chloe handles the logistical meltdown with cool efficiency, Nick slips into the garden where a crowd of impatient children is waiting. Chloe watches from the veranda as Nick completely transforms. He forgets his exhaustion, lets out a booming "Ho, ho, ho!" and instantly captures the attention of every single child.
Chloe manages to coordinate the ice sculptures perfectly, but her eyes keep drifting back to the garden. She watches Nick sit on a bench, patiently listening to a shy little girl talk about her Christmas wishes. A strange sensation stirs in Chloe’s chest—a mixture of admiration and a sudden longing for something deeper than corporate success.

Chapter 5: Unplanned Magic
The party is a resounding success. The ice sculptures gleam under the tropical sun, and the children are happily playing with their new toys. Chloe stands by the refreshment table, sipping a iced tea, when Nick approaches her. He has removed his heavy beard and wig, revealing messy brown hair and a tired but satisfied smile.
"You're very good at what you do," Nick says softly, leaning against the railing next to her. "You handled that catering crisis like a general."
"And you are remarkably good with people," Chloe replies honestly, surprising herself. "I apologize for being so rude at the hotel. I was consumed by my schedule."
Nick smiles, nudging her shoulder playfully. "Apology accepted. It's easy to get caught up in the details and forget the bigger picture. This season isn't about the perfect ice sculpture or the exact timeline, Chloe. It's about how we make people feel."
Chloe looks down at her tablet, which is full of emails and alerts. For the first time all day, she turns the screen off. "I think I forgot how to do that a long time ago."
"Well, the day isn't over yet," Nick says, his eyes gleaming with that familiar spark of mischief. "There's a staff appreciation gathering down at a local hawker centre tonight. No clipboards allowed. Just good food and terrible karaoke. Would you like to come with me?"
Chloe feels her heart skip a beat. It goes entirely against her strict routine. "I really should go back to the office and file my reports."
"The reports can wait until Boxing Day," Nick challenges gently. "Live a little, Chloe."

Chapter 6: A New Perspective
The open-air hawker centre is alive with the aroma of satay and sizzling noodles. Neon lights flicker overhead, casting a vibrant glow over the festive crowd. Chloe sits at a plastic table, laughing freely as Nick attempts to eat spicy laksa while still wearing his bright red Santa trousers.
"You are a terrible influence," Chloe laughs, wiping a tear from her eye.
"I prefer the term 'festive catalyst,'" Nick corrects, raising his glass of sugar cane juice. "To breaking schedules."
"To breaking schedules," Chloe echoes, clinking her glass against his.
As the night progresses, Chloe realizes how much she has changed in just a few short hours. She spent years chasing perfection, believing that control was the only way to find satisfaction. But sitting here in the warm tropical night, surrounded by laughter and the genuine companionship of a man she met in a chaotic taxi dispute, she feels a profound sense of peace.
The moral of the story becomes clear to her: true joy cannot be scheduled, budgeted, or managed. It is found in the spontaneous detours of life, in the shared laughter with strangers, and in the willingness to let go of perfection to make room for connection.
Nick looks at her, his expression turning tender. "Are you glad you didn't take that VIP cab alone?"
Chloe smiles, her gaze locking onto his. "It was the best transport delay of my life."
As a sudden, refreshing tropical shower begins to fall, cooling the city streets, Nick reaches across the table and takes her hand. Chloe doesn't check her watch. She simply stays completely present in the magic of the moment.
