Record-Low Water Levels Across Germany Halt Rhine Cargo and Stall Construction

Low water levels on the Rhine River force freight ships to cut their cargo loads by half. This precaution prevents vessels from running aground. The bottleneck directly delays shipments of coal, chemicals, sand, and gravel. Consequently, building projects across western Germany face severe delays and rising material costs. Logistics companies are trying to move freight to rail and road networks. However, these alternatives already suffer from severe driver shortages and capacity limits.
