A profound shift in shelter management has seen the traditional brick-and-mortar rescue pen replaced by specialized, community-based foster networks across Britain. Recognizing that the loud, sterile environment of a traditional cattery can induce severe behavioral regression and chronic stress in felines, charities are heavily investing in home-fostering programs. These specialized networks are specifically designed for vulnerable categories, such as pregnant queens, unweaned kittens, and senior "golden oldies" who require a quiet domestic routine to thrive.The data supporting this shift is overwhelmingly positive. Behavioral assessments show that cats housed in a dedicated foster home exhibit significantly lower levels of stress-induced illness, such as Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease (FLUTD), and are rehomed much faster once listed. Highlighting the vital importance of this domestic bridge, a Blue Cross rehoming coordinator explained: "A home environment allows a rescue cat to show their true personality. It gives us the precise data we need to match them with the perfect forever family, far away from the stress of a traditional kennel block."
