Tommy and Buster - Episode 10 - The Museum Mystery

The February half-term was turning out to be a thoroughly washed-out affair. The Yorkshire rain was relentless, turning the backyard into a swamp and forcing Tommy inside. Sensing his impending mischief, Rita handed Tommy fifty pence and told him to clear out to the local civic museum down by the town hall.

"It’s educational," Mam said, shoving his woollen duffle coat into his hands. "And more importantly, it's dry. Just don't take that dog."
Naturally, Buster refused to be left behind. By the time Tommy reached the grand, soot-stained steps of the museum, a wet, shivering terrier was tucked firmly inside the front of his oversized coat, with only a black nose poking through the toggle buttons.
The museum was a quiet, cavernous place that smelled heavily of floor polish and old paper. It was filled with glass cabinets showcasing Victorian stuffed birds, ancient Roman coins found in the local hills, and the crown jewel of the collection: a fully restored, life-sized replica of a 1920s coal miner’s cottage.
Tommy wandered into the exhibition hall, marveling at the waxwork miner sitting by a fake coal fire. Buster, smelling the faint scent of real lard on the antique frying pan on the display table, began to squirm. Before Tommy could tighten his grip, Buster wriggled free, dropped to the parquet floor, and bolted straight under the velvet ropes of the display.
"Buster, heel!" Tommy hissed in a panicked whisper.
Buster ignored him completely. He trotted right up to the waxwork miner, gave the figure’s plaster boot a thorough sniff, and then decided the space beneath the historical patchwork bed looked like an excellent place for a nap. He squeezed under the heavy woolen counterpane and disappeared from view.
Just then, the heavy footsteps of Mr. Grimsby, the notoriously grumpy museum curator, echoed down the corridor. Mr. Grimsby was a man who viewed children as a direct threat to historical preservation.
Desperate, Tommy ducked under the velvet rope, crawled under the miner's bed, and grabbed Buster by the collar. But as he tried to back out, his duffle coat caught on the sharp iron frame of the antique bed. With a loud creak, the entire bed shifted, knocking into the waxwork miner.
Tommy froze in the darkness beneath the frilled valance. From above, he heard the curator's voice. "Who's in here? Show yourself!"
Through the gap in the bedskirt, Tommy saw Mr. Grimsby's shiny black brogues stop right next to the bed. Tommy held his breath, pinning Buster’s jaws shut with his hand. Suddenly, Buster let out a massive, muffled sneeze.
The bed shook. Mr. Grimsby jumped back with a gasp, convinced the 1920s waxwork had come to life. He let out a high-pitched yelp, dropped his clipboard, and sprinted out of the hall to fetch the security guard.
Seizing the moment, Tommy unhooked his coat, scrambled out from under the bed with Buster tucked under his arm, and dashed out through the emergency exit into the rainy afternoon. They didn't stop running until they reached the safety of High Street, leaving the curator to solve the mystery of the sneezing miner’s cottage.
