Blindsided by Christmas

Zoe backs her old but beloved car into the driveway. The August heat radiates off the road like an oven. She glares at the car sitting by her porch.

"I refuse to give all that money to that shop just to do some basic repairs," Zoe says, checking her phone.
She scrolls through her car repairs forum. A prominent thread warns users about the dangers of cheap car repair hack. “Pay a professional,” the top comment reads. “Shortcuts always backfire.”
Zoe scoffs, as so many people have before her when given advice from those who have had the experience and know better. She hits reply: “I can handle this, just a simple hack.”
She starts working on the car but when she reaches into her kit for a specific tool, she realises the box is empty.
"Great," she mutters. "Now what do I do."
She marches into her garage and rifles through a plastic storage bin filled with things she had received last Christmas but never bothered to use. Her fingers wrap around what she thinks is the necessary tool to do the repairs.
"This will work," Zoe says, rushing back to the car.
Having done the works, Zoe steps back. She feels victorious.
That evening, Zoe drives to an outdoor food truck rally to meet Luke. Luke is a local mechanic and a fellow moderator on the vehicle forum. They have shared a playful, online banter for months, but now meet on a regular basis for coffee and to talk about cars.
Luke is waiting by a taco truck, looking sharp in a casual button-down shirt. He walks over as Zoe parks.
"Hey, Zoe," Luke says, smiling warmly. He eyes her car. "Wait, did you actually attempt the DIY hack from the forum thread?"
"I did," Zoe says, popping her sunglasses onto her head. "I saved a fortune. The guys on the forum are just dramatic."
Luke walks around the car to inspect her work. The setting sun catches the passenger door that she fixed at a sharp angle. Luke blinks. He leans in closer, squinting. Then, a massive grin spreads across his face.
"Zoe," Luke chuckles, pointing at the repair. "What is that?"
Zoe walks over and looks. Her stomach drops. The immense pressure from her frantic scraping has damaged the surface of the door.
"Oh, no," Zoe whispers, her face burning hotter than the summer air.
"It is a total disaster," Zoe groans, covering her eyes. "I wanted to show everyone on the forum I was independent and savvy, but I just left a big old ugly mess on my car."
Luke stops laughing. He steps closer, his voice turning gentle. "Hey, it's okay to want to do things yourself. Your independence is one of the things I admire about you on the forum. But true capability isn't about skipping steps to prove a point. Sometimes, taking a shortcut just leaves you blind to what's right in front of you."
Zoe looks up at Luke. Her stubborn pride softens under his kind gaze. "I guess I was wrong."
"Tell you what," Luke says, offering his hand. "Let's enjoy our coffee. Tomorrow, bring the car down to my shop. I'll help you smooth the surface and we can do it all again properly, on the house."
Zoe smiles, the embarrassment fading into relief. "Deal. We can have dinner too, but it's on me."
The next day, Zoe posts the picture of the DIY repair on the forum with the caption: “When you try to force a cheap fix, you end up blindsided by Christmas.” The post goes viral on the forum, but Zoe is too busy enjoying her dinner with Luke to care. She realizes that rushing to save a dollar only obscures the true and rightful path ahead.
