Can a shattered dinner lead to a perfectly seasoned romance?
Chapter 1: A New Start
Steam coats the kitchen windows of the cozy Rennes townhouse, blurring the falling snow outside. Chloe adjusts her digital meat thermometer with surgical precision. She wipes an invisible speck of flour from the counter. Twenty-five people are arriving in exactly two hours. Every detail must be perfect.
"You know, breathing is actually allowed on holidays," Julian says. He leans against the doorframe, a relaxed smile tugging at his lips. He holds a wooden spoon like a scepter.
Chloe rolls her eyes, though her heart does a tiny, annoying flutter. Her mother hired Julian to assist with the holiday rush, but his main job seems to be testing Chloe’s patience. "Breath is for people who don't have twenty-five relatives expecting a flawless French feast, Julian. This coq au vin has been marinating since yesterday. It is a masterpiece."
"It’s a stew, Chloe. A delicious, slow-cooked stew, but it doesn't require a military strategy." Julian walks over, stepping into her personal space to peek into the oven. He smells like cinnamon and fresh pine. "The news this morning said the local markets are facing massive holiday supply chain delays. Half the town is stressing over missing ingredients, and here you are, running a boot camp."
"Exactly!" Chloe says, tapping her clipboard. "Because of those news reports, we can't afford a single mistake. There are no backup ingredients in Rennes today. This dinner is our only shot."
Chloe’s mother, Beatrice, hustles into the kitchen. Her arms are full of mismatched tablecloths. "Is it ready? The cousins just texted. They are parked down the street!"
"Right on time," Chloe beams, her inner event planner rejoicing. "Mom, help me lift the cocotte out. Julian, open the oven door."
Julian opens the heavy glass door. Chloe and Beatrice grab their thickest oven mitts. Together, they hoist the massive, scorching-hot cast-iron pot. It weighs a ton, bubbling with rich red wine sauce, pearl onions, and perfectly browned rooster.
"Careful, it's heavy," Julian warns, reaching out to help.
"I’ve got it," Chloe insists, eager to prove she is in total control. To adjust her grip, she rests the heavy base of the cocotte directly onto the open, horizontal oven door.
Time slows down.
A sharp, metal groan echoes through the kitchen. Before anyone can move, the oven door hinges snap completely off. The door collapses downward. The heavy cast-iron pot slides right off the slick metal surface and crashes directly onto the tiled floor.
BOOM.
The lid flies off. A tidal wave of deep crimson wine sauce, chicken, and mushrooms explodes upward.
Chloe gasps, freezing in horror. She looks down. Her white Christmas sweater is completely splattered with red wine sauce. Julian has a mushroom stuck to his apron. The pristine white cabinets look like a crime scene from a cooking show. Total silence grips the room for three long seconds.
Chloe feels tears pricking her eyes. Her perfect holiday is ruined. The supply chain means there is no food left in the shops. She fails.
Then, Julian looks at the mushroom on his apron. He looks at Chloe's splattered sweater. He lets out a low giggle.
"Julian, this isn't funny!" Chloe gasps.
But Beatrice starts to giggle too. Within moments, her mother is laughing so hard she has to hold onto the counter. The infectious sound fills the room. Julian joins in, his rich laughter echoing off the sauce-stained walls.
Julian suddenly clears his throat and begins to sing a playful, operatic twist on an old French folk song. "The rooster has escaped the pot! He ran across the floor, he didn't want to be forgot!"
Beatrice claps her hands, singing along, making up ridiculous lyrics about a flying chicken.
Chloe looks at the mess, then at Julian’s crinkled eyes, and finally at her ecstatic mother. The heavy weight in her chest suddenly lifts. A laugh bubbles up from her throat, bursting out loud and free. It is loud, messy, and absolutely imperfect.
She realizes that control is just an illusion. The holiday isn't about a flawless recipe; it is about the people who stand by you to clean up the mess.
"Well, Chef," Chloe smiles, grabbing a mop and winking at Julian. "What's the backup plan for twenty-five hungry people?"
Julian grins, handing her a towel. "We make grilled cheese, and we make it together."
