The snow falls in heavy, thick flakes as the Midnight Express slides into Chicago’s historic Union Station. It is nearly midnight, and the grand terminal is a cathedral of golden light, echoing with the distant sound of holiday choirs and the chatter of late-night travelers rushing to make it home before Santa arrives.
Chloe steps off the train platform, her boots crunching against a thin layer of fresh snow that has drifted past the station barriers. The air is bitterly cold, a sharp contrast to the balmy June afternoon where this journey truly began, but she hardly notices the chill. Liam walks closely beside her, his arm wrapped securely around her waist, while his other hand easily handles Grandma Helen’s large suitcase.
"We made it," Chloe breathes, her breath pluming in the frosty air. She turns to look at her grandmother, who is being carefully assisted down the train steps by Eleanor.
Helen takes a deep breath of the crisp Chicago air, a look of pure, childlike wonder on her face. "Oh, look at this place. It looks exactly the same as it did when your grandfather took me here forty years ago. Not a single thing has changed."
"Except this time, you have an extra grandson-in-law helper," Eleanor whispers loudly, nudging Helen and pointing a gloved finger toward Liam.
Chloe shoots her mother a warning look, but Liam just laughs, the sound rich and warm in the chilly terminal. "I am happy to officialize the title, Eleanor, but for tonight, I am just the luggage coordinator."
They walk through the soaring stone arches of the main lobby, where a massive fifty-foot Christmas tree stands decorated in classic silver and gold ribbons. Waiting beneath the tree is a large, loud crowd of aunts, uncles, and cousins, all holding handmade welcome signs and wearing matching red holiday sweaters.
"They are here!" Aunt Susan shrieks, waving a pair of tinsel pompoms.
In an instant, the quiet bubble of the sleeper car is replaced by the beautiful chaos of a massive family reunion. Chloe is pulled into a succession of tight, wool-scented hugs, while Eleanor immediately begins weeping tears of joy, burying her face in her sister’s shoulder.
Amidst the swirling vortex of family introductions, Chloe looks back over her shoulder, suddenly worried that Liam might feel overwhelmed by the sheer volume of the loud, ecstatic group.
She shouldn't have worried. Liam stands perfectly at ease, shaking Uncle Greg’s hand with a firm, confident grip while Uncle Greg enthusiastically pats him on the back. Within two minutes, Liam is already laughing at one of Greg’s terrible holiday jokes, holding up the luggage tray like a seasoned member of the family.
Grandma Helen is escorted to a waiting wheelchair, surrounded by her grandchildren who take turns kissing her cheeks. She looks up through the crowd, catching Chloe’s eye, and gives her a slow, deliberate nod of approval.
"He’s a keeper, Chloe," Aunt Susan whispers loudly in Chloe’s ear, nudging her toward Liam. "And to think, you found him because you can't read an online calendar. Your cousin Sarah spends thousands on dating apps and gets nothing but guys who live with their parents. You hit the jackpot via software glitch."
Chloe smiles, watching Liam gently help Helen adjust her winter scarf. "Yeah," Chloe says softly, her heart swelling with an emotion so intense it catches in her throat. "I really did."
The family coordinates a fleet of vehicles to transport everyone back to the grand family home in the suburbs. As they walk out toward the snow-covered parking lot, Liam slips his hand into Chloe’s, pulling her slightly back from the rest of the rushing group.
"You doing okay, Christmas?" he asks softly, his eyes searching hers in the dim glow of the streetlights. "I know this isn't exactly the quiet holiday lunch we originally talked about in November."
Chloe stops walking, turning to face him fully. She reaches up, brushing a stray snowflake away from his eyelashes. "Liam, this is better than anything I could have ever imagined. Six months ago, I was sitting at a desk at three in the morning, absolutely terrified that I was going to ruin Christmas for the people I love. But looking at you, and looking at them... I realize that mistakes aren't things we need to fix. They are just the universe rewriting our plans into something better."
Liam smiles, his fingers gently tracing her jawline. "I love the universe’s editing style."
He leans down, his lips meeting hers in a slow, deep kiss that tastes faintly of peppermint and winter wind. Around them, the city of Chicago sleeps under a blanket of white, but inside the station courtyard, the holiday season is completely, beautifully alive.
