Midnight Train to Christmas - Chapter 14: The New Year's Clock

The glittering crystal ball hangs suspended high above Times Square, but hundreds of miles away in their home city, Chloe and Liam are celebrating the final hours of the year in a much quieter fashion. The frantic rush of the Christmas reunion has passed, leaving behind a crisp, peaceful late December atmosphere.

Chloe stands on the rooftop patio of her apartment building, wrapped in a thick wool coat. The city skyline stretches out before her like a sea of twinkling diamonds, reflecting off the icy surface of the river below. Down on the streets, the faint sound of car horns and distant music echoes through the freezing night air.
"Penny for your thoughts?" a warm voice asks from behind.
Liam steps out onto the terrace, holding two steaming mugs of hot apple cider spiked with cinnamon. He wears a dark beanie pulled low over his ears, his breath pluming in white clouds as he approaches. He slips one of the mugs into Chloe’s gloved hands, his fingers lingering against hers.
"Thanks," Chloe smiles, taking a grateful sip. She leans back against the brick railing, looking up at him. "I was just thinking about how much can change in a single year. Exactly twelve months ago, I was sitting alone in my apartment, staring at a color-coded spreadsheet of my life goals. I had everything planned out down to the exact month."
Liam chuckles, taking a sip from his own mug. "And let me guess. Meeting a rogue railway supervisor wasn't on the spreadsheet?"
"Not even a little bit," Chloe laughs, her shoulder bumping against his. "If you had told me back then that a catastrophic 3:00 AM booking error would lead to a luxury summer train trip, a new boyfriend, and a lakeside cottage in Michigan, I would have told you your booking system wasn't the only thing that was broken."
Liam’s expression turns soft and earnest. He sets his mug down on the ledge and turns to face her fully, taking both of her hands in his. "You know, the railway company officially implemented the final phase of that new software patch yesterday. No more overlapping release windows. No more sleep-deprived travelers clicking June instead of December."
"A bittersweet victory," Chloe murmurs, a playful glint in her eyes. "So nobody else gets to make the perfect mistake?"
"Nope. The glitch is officially gone," Liam says, his voice dropping to a tender, intimate register. "But I told the engineering team that they owe me a massive bonus. Because that software flaw gave me the best thing that ever happened to me."
Chloe’s heart does a familiar, joyful flutter. Before she can reply, a sudden chorus of shouts and cheers erupts from the apartments below. Horns begin to blare, and the distant sound of church bells echoes across the city blocks.
"Ten seconds to midnight!" Liam says, his eyes locked onto hers, completely ignoring the flashing lights of the distant skyline.
"Are we counting down?" Chloe asks, her breath catching in her throat.
"No," Liam smiles, his hands moving up to gently cup her face, his thumbs brushing against her cold cheeks. "We don't need to watch the clock anymore, Christmas. We are right where we need to be."
As the distant crowds yell "Happy New Year!" and a brilliant burst of green and gold fireworks illuminates the night sky above the river, Liam leans down. His lips meet hers in a deep, lingering kiss that melts away the winter chill. The countdown is over, the schedules are gone, and for the first time in her life, Chloe doesn't care what happens next month or next year. She is entirely, beautifully present.
