Midnight Train to Christmas - Chapter 17: The Matriarch's Blessing

 Synopsis

A few days after their midnight engagement at the train station, Chloe and Liam visit Grandma Helen to share the happy news. Fearing that her mother and grandmother will instantly try to take over and over-schedule a massive wedding, Chloe resolves to keep things simple. However, Helen has one final, beautifully unscripted surprise in store that proves love never requires a strict itinerary.

The morning sun streams into Grandma Helen’s cozy sunroom, warming the vintage floral tablecloth. The room smells of fresh lavender and dark roast coffee. Chloe adjusts the delicate gold band on her ring finger, a nervous but excited energy humming in her chest. Beside her, Liam sits comfortably, pouring a fresh cup of tea for Eleanor, who is currently hovering over a platter of blueberry muffins.
"Alright, you two," Eleanor says, setting the teapot down with a definitive clink. She squints at Chloe’s hand. "You’ve been hiding your left hand under the table since you walked through the door. What is going on?"
Chloe looks at Liam, who nods with an encouraging, dimpled smile. Taking a deep breath, Chloe places her left hand flat on the table, letting the diamond catch the morning light. "Liam asked me to marry him. At 3:00 AM. Right at the customer service desk."
Eleanor gasps, dropping her napkin. "Oh, sweetie!" She immediately throws her arms around Chloe, then lunges across the table to fiercely hug Liam. "I knew it! I told Susan that a train station anniversary was suspicious!"
From the corner of the room, Grandma Helen’s rocking chair comes to a slow halt. The elderly woman looks at the ring, then looks up at the couple. Instead of cheering, a slow, triumphant smirk spreads across her face. "Well, it’s about time. I was beginning to think I’d have to cause another software malfunction just to speed things up."
"Grandma," Chloe laughs, walking over to wrap her arms around Helen’s neck. "You had nothing to do with the engagement."
"Keep telling yourself that, darling," Helen winks, patting Chloe’s cheek. "But I know a good destination when I see one. Now, let’s talk about the itinerary. I assume you have a three-hundred-page wedding binder ready to go? Color-coded seating charts? A spreadsheet for the flower arrangements?"
Chloe stiffens slightly, looking back at Liam. This was exactly what she was afraid of. The old Chloe would have already spent seventy-two hours straight designing a project management timeline for a June wedding.
"Actually, Grandma," Chloe says firmly, stepping back and slipping her hand into Liam's. "We talked about it on the drive over. No binders. No strict schedules. We want a tiny, simple ceremony. Maybe just a few family members at the Michigan cottage later this summer. We don't want to spend the next year stressing over a single day on the calendar."
Eleanor opens her mouth to protest, but Helen holds up a single, wrinkled hand, instantly silencing the room. She looks deeply into Chloe’s eyes, her expression turning incredibly soft and full of pride.
"Good," Helen says quietly. "You really have learned, haven't you?"
Helen reaches into the pocket of her purple holiday bathrobe and pulls out a small, tarnished silver key. She places it gently into Chloe’s palm, right next to the engagement ring.
"What is this?" Chloe asks, looking at the intricate engravings on the old key.
"That is the key to the vintage trunk in the cottage attic," Helen explains, her voice thick with beautiful memories. "Inside that trunk is my own wedding dress from 1962. I didn't plan a grand wedding either, Chloe. Your grandfather and I ran away to a little lakeside chapel on a random Tuesday because we just couldn't wait any longer. It wasn't perfect, it wasn't scheduled, but it was ours."
Chloe’s breath catches in her throat, tears instantly welling up in her eyes. She looks down at the key, realizing that her new philosophy on life wasn't a rejection of family tradition, it was the ultimate continuation of it.
Liam steps forward, wrapping a supportive arm around Chloe’s shoulders. "We would be absolutely honored, Helen. We’ll make sure the cottage wedding is just as unscripted as yours was."
Helen smiles, leaning back in her rocking chair and picking up her teacup. "Just make sure there is plenty of champagne. And Eleanor, stop crying into the muffins, dear. We have an unplanned wedding to not prepare for."
