The Only Man Banned from Decorating by a Federal Court
In a quiet, upscale neighborhood in Hayden, Idaho, a local man took the concept of a Christmas light display to an aggressive extreme. His massive annual show featured a 200,000-light display, a live Nativity scene with a camel, a 35-piece choir, and Santa Claus. The local issue here was a full-blown war with his Homeowners Association (HOA), which claimed the massive spectacle violated neighborhood rules, choked the small residential roads with thousands of tourist vehicles, and blocked emergency access. The petty neighborhood feud escalated so severely that it went all the way to a U.S. Federal Court. Ultimately, a federal judge ruled against him, effectively making him one of the only people in American history legally barred by a federal court injunction from putting up an over-the-top Christmas display on his own property.
