The Pig That Faced a Royal Trial

In 1386, a pig in the town of Falaise, Normandy, was arrested, put on trial, and sentenced to death for attacking a young child. Medieval French law treated animals as morally responsible agents capable of committing crimes. The pig was brought to the courtroom, provided with a lawyer, and eventually executed in the town square while dressed in human clothes, including a jacket and breeches.
