The Singapore Sleigh-Ride - Chapter 10: A Tropical Tradition

A full twelve months pass in a whirlwind of spreadsheets, laughter, and community milestones. Christmas Eve arrives once again, bringing with it the familiar, heavy blanket of Singapore’s tropical heat. The bustling streets of Serangoon are alive with festive music, but tonight, Chloe stands inside a brightly lit, beautifully decorated community hall, completely at peace.

The banner above the stage reads: Sleigh-Ride Events Annual Christmas Gala. The room is a masterful blend of Chloe’s sharp logistical brilliance and Nick’s vibrant, theatrical heart. Recycled fairy lights cascade from the ceiling fans, local orchids bloom alongside traditional pine wreaths, and the scent of freshly baked pandan log cakes fills the air.
Chloe taps her tablet once, verifying that every single caterer is on time, every gift is wrapped, and every senior citizen from the Chinatown home has a comfortable seat. Her tailored festive outfit is immaculate, but her strict corporate scowl is completely gone, replaced by a radiant, relaxed smile.
"The gingerbread house is perfect, and the carolers are tuned to a tee," Chloe reports softly into her earpiece, a playful glint in her eye.
"Copy that, general. Santa is approaching the landing zone," Nick’s voice crackles back warmly in her ear.
Suddenly, the grand double doors open, and Nick steps into the hall. He wears the same heavy, authentic velvet Santa suit from the year before. Despite the intense humidity, his face glows with pure happiness as he lets out a deep, booming "Ho, ho, ho!" that instantly silences the room.
Dozens of children rush forward, their laughter echoing through the hall. Chloe watches from the sidelines, her heart swelling with an immense sense of pride. In just one year, Sleigh-Ride Events has become a beloved fixture in the local community. They spent the year organising events that matter, prioritising human connection over corporate profit margins.
As Nick finishes distributing the gifts and the live band kicks into an upbeat, tropical rendition of holiday classics, he slips away from the crowd. He finds Chloe standing near the refreshment station, holding two glasses of iced lime juice.
"You look phenomenal," Nick says, pulling down his faux beard and wiping his brow. "And this room is a triumph. Not a single timeline error in sight."
"That is because my business partner is an excellent motivator," Chloe laughs, handing him a drink. "Though I must ask, how did you actually get here from Chinatown this evening? I know the traffic on the Central Expressway was absolutely nightmarish."
Nick chuckles, taking a long sip of his juice. "Ah, the ultimate sleigh-ride repeat. I caught a cab outside the train station in full costume. The driver nearly fainted when I hopped into the front seat."
"Don't tell me you ran into another oblivious family," Chloe teases, adjusting his velvet collar.
"Worse," Nick winks. "A little girl spotted me through the window at a red light and shouted to her mother that Santa was stuck in traffic. The taxi driver turned to me and asked where my reindeer were. I told him the exact same thing I said a year ago—PM Lee won't let me fly this way in Singapore! The aviation fines are just too high."
Chloe bursts into a bright, clear laugh that draws affectionate glances from the nearby guests. "I cannot believe you are still using that line."
"Hey, it's a classic for a reason," Nick defends playfully, setting his glass down. He reaches out and gently takes her hands in his, his expression turning soft and incredibly tender. "And it did lead me to the most spectacular woman in the city."
Chloe looks into his deep blue eyes, the vibrant sounds of the community gala fading into the background. A year ago, she viewed Christmas as a series of stressful deadlines to be managed. Now, she understands that the holiday—and life itself—is about creating spaces where people feel seen, valued, and loved.
The ultimate moral of her journey is beautifully clear: when you stop trying to control every single second of your life, you finally leave room for the miracles you never saw coming.
"Merry Christmas, Nick," Chloe whispers, stepping into his arms.
"Merry Christmas, corporate," Nick replies softly.
As the band hits a triumphant chord and a magical burst of faux snow begins to drift over the dancing crowd, Nick leans down and kisses her. Surrounded by the warmth of their community and the joy of a shared purpose, Chloe doesn't think about tomorrow's schedule. She simply closes her eyes and enjoys the perfect, unscripted moment.
