The Singapore Sleigh-Ride - Chapter 11: The Next Horizon

The morning after the gala brings the quiet, therapeutic hum of a tropical rainfall. Fat raindrops splash against the glass windows of the Sleigh-Ride Events headquarters—a charmingly restored second-story shophouse filled with mismatched vintage desks, bright festive banners, and shelves groaning under the weight of event supplies.

Chloe sits at her desk, typing a series of thank-you emails to their volunteers. Her fingers move with their usual rhythmic speed, but her posture is completely relaxed. She sips from a porcelain cup of local kopi, entirely unbothered when a stray drop of coffee splashes onto her notepad. The old Chloe would have ripped the page out in horror; the new Chloe simply laughs and wipes it away with her thumb.
The bell above the shop door chimes, and Nick walks in, shaking a wet umbrella outside the threshold. He is clad in casual linens, carrying a cardboard tray holding two steaming bowls of minced meat noodles from the market downstairs.
"Breakfast is served, partner," Nick says, clearing a small space on her desk to set the bowls down. "I figured we should celebrate a completely flawless post-gala cleanup."
"You read my mind," Chloe smiles, closing her laptop without hesitation. "The feedback from the Chinatown home has been incredible, Nick. Auntie Mei said the pandan log cake was the best she has tasted in a decade."
"That is the highest praise we will ever receive," Nick chuckles, handing her a pair of chopsticks. He sits on the edge of her desk, his expression turning uncharacteristically thoughtful as he watches the rain stream down the windowpane.
Chloe notices the shift in his energy instantly. She sets her chopsticks down and nudges his knee. "Alright, Mr. Kringle. What is on your mind? You have that specific look you get right before you suggest a completely chaotic idea."
Nick rubs the back of his neck, a sheepish grin breaking through his serious expression. "Is it that obvious?"
"I have spent a year managing your spontaneity, Nick. I know the signs," she teases. "Spill."
Nick pulls a folded, glossy brochure from his back pocket and slides it across the desk. Chloe opens it to find a vibrant advertisement for the Southeast Asian Cultural Exchange Festival, a massive regional initiative taking place in Kuala Lumpur the following autumn.
"They reached out to me this morning," Nick explains, his eyes lighting up with that familiar, infectious passion. "They saw the press coverage from our community gala last night. They want Sleigh-Ride Events to consult on their entire regional outreach program. It means designing community-focused festivals across three different countries."
Chloe reads the brochure, a sudden thrill shooting through her chest. It is a massive project—easily the size of the corporate accounts she used to manage for Victoria’s agency. But this time, the goal isn't corporate profit; it is cultural preservation and regional connection.
"Nick, this is enormous," Chloe breathes, looking up at him. "It is an incredible opportunity. But it means expanding. It means travel, logistics across borders, and dealing with international transport regulations."
"I know," Nick says softly, reaching down to take her hand. "The old you would have calculated the risks, the budget deficits, and the potential for a logistical nightmare. And the old me would have just said 'let's go' without thinking about where we are going to sleep. But together..."
"Together, we actually have a shot at making it work," Chloe finishes for him, a brilliant smile spreading across her face.
She looks at the brochure, then looks back at the man who jumped into her taxi exactly one year ago. Her life had been a neat, predictable circle until he forced her to take a detour. Now, the horizon looks vast, unpredictable, and utterly thrilling.
"So," Chloe says, pulling her laptop back toward her with a decisive snap. "If we are going to pitch for an international cultural festival, we need a strategy. I will map out the cross-border transport timelines."
"And I will start scripting the opening ceremonies," Nick cheers, leaning down to plant a swift, joyful kiss on her cheek.
The tropical storm outside begins to clear, letting a brilliant beam of Singapore sunshine cut through the clouds and illuminate their small office. Chloe opens a fresh page in her notebook. She doesn't write a rigid timeline or a stressful deadline. Instead, she writes two words at the very top of the page: Our Future.
