February arrived with a biting frost that turned Pinewood into a glistening fortress of ice. Liam was currently sitting in the cab of his police truck, parked at a discreet distance from The Timeless Trinket. Beside him, Bandit sat in the passenger seat, staring intently through the frosted windshield, his ears twitching at every passing pedestrian.
"Listen to me, Bandit," Liam said, his voice deadly serious as he pointed a finger at the dog. "Today is Valentine’s Day. I have a plan, and you are not going to ruin it. In fact, you are going to help me."
Bandit let out a low tilt of his head, letting out a soft boof.
Liam’s new strategy was simple: lean into the chaos. If Bandit was determined to be a third wheel, Liam would turn him into a chaperone. He had spent the morning tying a small, red velvet pouch to Bandit’s collar. Inside was an antique silver key to a private greenhouse at the Pinewood Botanical Gardens—a place completely indoors, beautifully warm, and entirely devoid of stray cats, runaway snowplows, or missing children.
Liam unbuckled Bandit's harness. "Go on, boy. Take it to Clara."
Bandit jumped from the truck, trotting purposefully across the snow-dusted sidewalk. Through the window of the antique shop, Liam watched as Clara looked up from her counter, her face breaking into a wide smile as the massive German Shepherd pushed open the door with his nose.
Liam waited exactly three minutes before stepping out of the truck and following the paw prints. When he entered the shop, the familiar scent of old paper and lavender enveloped him. Clara was on her knees, laughing as she untied the velvet pouch from a very proud-looking Bandit.
"A key?" Clara asked, looking up as Liam approached. "Don't tell me you're locking me up, Constable."
"It’s for the tropical greenhouse down the road," Liam said, offering his hand to help her up. "I talked to the groundskeeper. It's completely closed to the public tonight. Just blooming orchids, warm air, and absolutely no distractions. Will you come with us?"
Clara looked at the key, then at Liam, her eyes softening. "I'd love to, Liam."
An hour later, they were standing inside a paradise of lush green ferns and vibrant pink petals. The contrast against the freezing Alberta winter outside was breathtaking. Bandit, seemingly understanding the gravity of the mission, sat perfectly at the entrance of the greenhouse, acting as a furry security guard.
"It's beautiful in here," Clara whispered, stepping close to a display of rare night-blooming jasmine.
"Not as beautiful as you," Liam said. It was a classic, corny line straight out of a script, but looking at her under the glass roof, he meant every word.
Clara turned to him, the soft humidity of the greenhouse making her cheeks flush a delicate pink. "Liam, we've been interrupted by baskets, cider, snowplows, and search-and-rescue teams. Are you sure we're safe now?"
"The perimeter is entirely secure," Liam promised, stepping into her space. He reached out, his hands resting gently on her waist.
Clara smiled, sliding her arms around his neck. The universe was finally, completely silent. There were no sirens, no stray cats, and no chaotic town emergencies. Liam leaned down, his eyes closing as his lips finally met hers in a soft, long-awaited kiss that tasted faintly of sweet jasmine.
It was perfect. A true Hallmark ending.
SPLAT.
A massive, heavy glob of condensation—built up on the glass ceiling directly above them from the intense tropical humidity—dropped with pinpoint accuracy, landing squarely on the back of Liam's neck and sliding down his shirt.
Liam gasped, jumping backward from the sudden shock of ice-cold water, his romantic expression twisting into a grimace of pure shock.
Clara froze for a second, looking at Liam's startled face, before bursting into a fit of uncontrollable, breathless laughter. From the doorway, Bandit let out a loud, cheerful bark, as if approving of the universe's ultimate timing.
Liam shook his collar out, a defeated but genuine smile spreading across his face as he looked at Clara. He pulled her back into his arms, water droplets and all. "You know what? I'll take it."
"Happy Valentine's Day, Liam," Clara giggled, leaning back in for a second, uninterrupted kiss.
