Synopsis
A year after transforming the Pulau Ubin kampong house into a thriving weekend culinary sanctuary, Vanessa and William face a modern dilemma. A viral social media review brings a chaotic wave of digital influencers to the quiet island, forcing Vanessa to use her sharp management skills to protect the retreat's authentic peace from the pressures of internet fame.
A Singapore Christmas - Chapter 11: The Digital Deluge
The morning light on Pulau Ubin filtered softly through the leaves of the giant banyan trees, casting dancing shadows across the freshly varnished floorboards of the kampong retreat. Vanessa stood on the wide wooden porch, taking a slow sip of her morning tea. The air here was always different from the main island—fresher, cooler, and entirely disconnected from the fast-paced rush of the city.
Over the past twelve months, she and William had carefully restored the old structure just as Ah Ma had wished. It was now a peaceful sanctuary where small groups from the mainland could escape the concrete jungle, harvest wild lemongrass, and learn the art of slow-cooked heritage cuisine.
Or at least, it had been peaceful until three days ago.
"Van, we have a major operational anomaly," William said, walking out onto the porch while holding his tablet. He looked bewildered. "The registration portal for our weekend cooking retreat has completely crashed. We have over ten thousand pending booking requests."
Vanessa set her teacup down, her corporate instincts instantly clicking into high gear. "Ten thousand? William, we only take twelve people per weekend. What happened?"
William tapped the screen and handed it to her. "A prominent global travel influencer with five million followers snuck onto the island last weekend. She posted a sixty-second video called 'Singapore's Secret Forgotten Paradise'. It has already racked up twenty million views."
Vanessa groaned, scrolling through the comment section. The video showcased the turquoise wood, the pristine coastline, and William’s slow-simmered dishes, calling it the ultimate aesthetic backdrop for social media content.
Before she could form a response, the low chug of a bumboat engine echoed from the nearby coastline. Vanessa looked out toward their private wooden jetty. A crowd of young people carrying selfie sticks, professional camera rigs, and portable ring lights was pouring out onto the grass. Several of them were already posing against the historic stilts of the house, completely ignoring the 'Private Property' signs.
"Excuse me! Are you the owners?" a young woman in oversized sunglasses shouted from the lawn, waving her smartphone. "We want to do a live-stream collaboration! Can we get a table for ten and the signature claypot rice right now? We’ll give you a shoutout!"
William looked at Vanessa, a flash of genuine panic in his eyes. "Van, I only prepped enough fresh ingredients for our registered guests. If a hundred people descend on this kitchen, the ecosystem of the island retreat collapses."
Vanessa stood tall, smoothing down her linen shirt. The digital crowd thought they were dealing with a gentle, rustic island host. They had no idea they were facing a former New York corporate enforcer who knew exactly how to manage an unruly crowd.
She walked down the wooden steps, her posture commanding absolute authority. "Good morning, everyone," she announced, her voice cutting through the chatter of the crowd. "We appreciate your enthusiasm for our heritage house. However, this is a strict, pre-booked conservation sanctuary. To protect the natural environment of Pulau Ubin, we do not accept walk-ins, and commercial filming without a permit is strictly prohibited."
A murmur of disappointment ran through the crowd. "But it's just a quick video!" one young man protested, adjusting his camera lens. "It's good for your business!"
"Our business is preserving history, not chasing algorithms," Vanessa countered smoothly, pulling up a digital file on her tablet. "According to the National Parks Board guidelines for Pulau Ubin, large unauthorized gatherings in this zone carry an immediate dispersal order. I have already notified the island rangers to help redirect you to the public cycling trails."
As if on cue, the distant sound of an island park ranger's scooter echoed down the gravel path. Realizing their aesthetic photo opportunity was officially over, the crowd of influencers began to pack up their gear, grumbling as they headed back toward the main jetty.
William let out a massive sigh of relief, walking down the steps to stand beside her. "Wow. The 'Ice Queen' makes a rare tropical appearance."
"They needed a reality check, Chef," Vanessa laughed, her sharp expression instantly melting into a warm smile as she leaned against his shoulder. "Ah Ma didn't leave us this land to become a viral photo backdrop. She left it to be a sanctuary. We need to implement a strict digital-free policy for our guests. No phones, no streaming—just cooking, resting, and connecting."
William smiled, his signature dimple catching the morning sun. He wrapped his arms around her waist, looking out at the beautiful, quiet coastline that was once again peaceful. "I love the way your brilliant corporate brain protects our quiet life."
"It’s called a strategic merger of boundaries, William," Vanessa whispered, leaning up to kiss him.
The tropical breeze rustled through the banyan trees, carrying the authentic, undisturbed sounds of the island nature into the bright sky. Vanessa had spent her youth managing the chaos of Wall Street, but standing here in the arms of the man she loved, she knew her greatest professional achievement would always be defending the quiet paradise they called home.
