Despite their wonderful temperaments, senior rescue felines face uphill battles in finding new homes across Britain. National data indicates that there are currently around 13.1 million pet cats living in the UK, with roughly 150,000 felines entering the shelter system every single year. When these animals hit their senior years, their stay in rescue facilities stretches dramatically. Feline welfare giant Cats Protection reports that older cats in their care routinely wait three times longer to find forever homes than their younger, kitten counterparts.
To combat this, shelters celebrate Mature Moggies Day to spotlight senior kitizens. Daniel Warren-Cummings, a Senior Behaviour Engagement Manager at Cats Protection, emphasizes the joy of senior adoption, stating: "Mature moggies are just as wonderfully varied as their younger counterparts." They bring massive rewards to a household, usually needing less intense training. Mel Catmore, a dedicated fosterer who cared for a 20-year-old shelter resident named Louly, shared firsthand experience of an older cat's charm, saying: "Louly has only grown more charming with age. She is a hugely affectionate cat who enjoys being the centre of attention."
