Rescue Cats - Men Prefer Mature Moggies

A fascinating demographic shift has emerged across the United Kingdom, revealing that adult rescue cats are finding an unexpected fanbase among men. According to data released by the industry body UK Pet Food, a significant 27% of men chose to welcome an adult cat into their lives over a four-year tracking period. This stands in stark contrast to women, where only 18% opted for an adult feline over a kitten during the same window. This trend translates to roughly 1.5 million male households explicitly benefiting from the calm, independent companionship of a mature rescue cat, compared to 1 million female households. Welfare experts note that this helps ease the burden on shelters, where older animals typically face extended stays. While a fluffy kitten is easily rehomed, mature cats often sit quietly waiting for a second chance at domestic life. As the UK Pet Food team highlights in their analysis, this wave indicates a broader "appreciation for mature pets across all demographics," highlighting how modern British men value the low-maintenance, stress-reducing nature of an established adult moggy over an energetic kitten.
