United States Tech Corporation Meta Faces Major Trial Over Youth Privacy Claims
A federal trial has commenced as 29 states take Meta to court, accusing the tech giant of creating a public nuisance and fueling a youth mental health crisis. The state attorneys general argue that Meta intentionally engineered psychologically manipulative features, such as infinite scrolling and appearance-altering image filters, to maximise screen time. Lawyers are presenting internal company research showing that Meta was aware its engagement metrics drove depression, anxiety, and body image issues in teenagers. The states are demanding substantial financial penalties and permanent changes to parental verification protocols and recommendation algorithms.
