United States State of Hawaii Assesses Damage Following Tropical Storm Lala
Emergency response teams are addressing severe destruction after Lala skirted the Big Island, bringing 65 mph winds and dumping up to 32 inches of rain. The storm, which was downgraded from a hurricane, destroyed more than 100 homes and caused major highway collapses that blocked access to local medical facilities. One traffic-related death has been reported, and over 200,000 households were left without electricity across the islands. Governor Josh Green estimates the state faces hundreds of millions of dollars in damages, while officials warn of post-storm dangers involving cleanup equipment and downed power lines.
