The crisp autumn air had given way to an unseasonably warm Indian summer, prompting the town of Pinewood to host one final beachfront bash at Whispering Pines Lake. Volley balls bounced, families picnicked, and Constable Liam Sterling patrolled the boardwalk. Even in the heat, his uniform was immaculate, though he had swapped his heavy serge for a lighter short-sleeved duty shirt. At his side, Barnaby trotted along, his tongue lolling out happily as he scanned the sand.
Liam’s eyes, however, were scanning for only one person.
He found her near the boardwalk pavilion. Clara was setting up a pop-up ice cream cart, looking breathtaking in a yellow sundress and a wide-brimmed straw hat.
"Need some official police assistance, Clara?" Liam asked, stepping up to the cart.
Clara looked up, wiping a bead of condensation from her forehead, her smile instantly brightening. "Liam! Actually, yes. This umbrella mechanism is stuck. I can't get it to shade the ice cream tubs, and they're going to melt."
"Step aside," Liam said heroically. He reached up, his muscles flexing as he wrestled with the stubborn metal latch of the large beach umbrella. With a satisfying click, the giant yellow canopy popped open, perfectly shading the cart.
"My hero," Clara teased, her eyes lingering on him a little longer than usual. She scooped a perfect cone of mint chocolate chip and handed it to him. "On the house."
"Thank you. You know, Clara," Liam said, leaning against the wooden railing of the boardwalk, "the sun is starting to set soon. They're lighting the beach bonfires. I was wondering if you’d like to sit by one with me? Just to... ensure fire safety compliance, of course."
Clara chuckled, stepping out from behind the cart. "I would love to comply with fire safety, Liam. Let me just lock up."
A few minutes later, they were walking along the shoreline. The sky was turning a brilliant shade of pink and orange, casting a romantic glow over the water. The sound of gentle waves lapping against the shore filled the air. Barnaby was trotting a few yards ahead, seemingly distracted by a flock of seagulls.
Liam felt his hand brush against Clara’s. Taking a brave breath, he slid his fingers into hers. Clara didn't pull away; instead, she squeezed his hand and looked up at him, her eyes reflecting the sunset.
They stopped near a quiet stretch of the dunes, away from the crowd. The ambient noise of the beach seemed to fade into a soft hum.
"Liam," Clara murmured, looking up at him beneath the brim of her straw hat. "You always find a way to make this town feel safe. But right now, I'm just really glad it's just you and me."
"Me too, Clara," Liam whispered. He reached up, gently tilting her chin up. He began to lean in. Clara closed her eyes, tilting her face toward his. There were no baking disasters, no lakes to jump into, and no whipped cream canisters. It was the perfect, uninterrupted Hallmark moment.
Suddenly, a loud, panicked squawk broke the silence.
Barnaby had not been chasing seagulls. He had discovered a rogue, wind-blown inflatable giant flamingo pool float drifting near the shore. Confusing the bright pink plastic bird for a hostile intruder threatening beach security, Barnaby had tackled it mid-air.
The resulting collision sent the massive, air-filled flamingo bouncing wildly down the sand dune—straight into the back of Liam and Clara.
The heavy, oversized inflatable struck them like a runaway beach ball. Liam tried to intercept it, but the sheer momentum knocked both him and Clara off their feet. They tumbled backward off the dune, rolling straight into the shallow, wet shoreline.
Liam blinked through a face full of wet sand just in time to see Barnaby proudly standing over them, the deflating pink neck of the plastic flamingo clamped firmly in his jaws.
Liam looked over at Clara. Her beautiful yellow sundress was covered in wet sand, her straw hat was floating a few feet away in the water, and she had a piece of green seaweed draped perfectly over her left ear.
"I am... profoundly, deeply sorry," Liam groaned, spitting out a grain of sand. "I will personally arrest that bird."
Clara plucked the seaweed from her ear, looked at the victorious German Shepherd, and shook her head, a familiar laugh bubbling up. "Well, Constable, you certainly know how to sweep a girl off her feet."
Liam smiled ruefully, offering her a hand up. The kiss was ruined, but as they walked back up the beach, soaking wet and covered in sand, Clara kept her hand firmly locked in his.
